Our Loïe

At Loïe’s magazine, we’d like to give you some background on the photo of our covers.

Its author is Julie Lememberg, a dance photographer based in New York City, whose photos have been published in several newspapers and magazines, such as The New York Times and Dance Magazine.

Although many believed that this picture in black and white portrayed the famous Loïe Fuller in the early 20th. Century, the dancer is Jody Sperling, also based in New York City, who has been developing a whole series inspired on shocking and well crafted Fuller’s technique using lighting and costumes, entitled Time Lapse Dance.

In this picture, Sperling movement was captured in performance at Williamsburg Art Nexus (WAX, Brooklyn, 2003) during her piece Dance of the Elements, part of the above-mentioned series.

Jody acted as a consultant for the César-winning feature film The Dancer (dir. Stephanie Di Giusto), which premiered at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. She also served as choreographer and dance coach for the film. In 2019, Sperling was commissioned to create a major new homage to Fuller utilizing twenty-first-century technologies that will be featured in the forthcoming Fuller documentary Obsessed with Light, directed by Sabine Krayenbuehl and Zeva Oelbaum.

Julie Lememberg’s next project is a coloring book inspired on women dance artists in the 21st. Century, which will be out of the print very soon.
